Janet Jackson Breaks Down In Tears Onstage While Singing About Heartbreak

This particular song hit very close to home...

Janet Jackson’s State of The World Tour is officially in action and so is Damita Jo.

Kicking things off with her signature iconic dance moves, complete with an additionally iconic Milly Rock, expect nothing less of raw, bona fide stage delivery from Miss Jackson. And yes, that also goes for her more poignant songs as well, like the emotionally-stirring “What About.”

In a tearful moment onstage, a clip recorded by a fan showed Janet breaking down presumably in the middle of singing the 1997 single from her critically-acclaimed opus, The Velvet Rope. As any devout Janet fans would, the crowd began roaring in support of her even as she brought her hand to her face when the tears begin to roll.

After doubling over for a quick recovery from the emotional outbreak, she lifted back up for a more personal statement that’s not a lyric in the single: “This is me.” The moving track includes lyricism that speaks to a toxic relationship contaminated by several types of emotional and verbal abuse, as Janet stated years ago in a 1998 Rolling Stone interview.

“Elements of the song have to do with me," she said to Rolling Stone. “And elements are from René [Elizondo]’s life. Abuse of all kinds –– emotional, verbal –– is incredibly common. The challenge is creating boundaries that shouldn't be trespassed.”

Some fans have pointed to Janet’s highly publicized split from her husband Wissam Al Mana as the cutting depth of the lyrics that brought her to tears. However, she doesn’t specifically name him in her emotional rendition.

Either way, we’re sending our love and support for Janet as she continues embarking on her tour and slaying first-time motherhood.
