Will Smith Verzuz LL Cool J: The Fresh Prince Talks Of A Potential Matchup
“Summertime” or “Mama Said Knock You Out”? “Get Jiggy With It” or “I Need Love”?
It’s hard to imagine a life before Verzuz, the head-to-head artist showcase created by super producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. But since its inception, these otherwise barbershop talk hypotheticals have become a cultural mainstay.
The latest potential match-up that has ears perked is that between two of the most successful rappers-turned-actors of all time: Will Smith and LL Cool J.
Smith got to discussing the potential match-up with SiriusXM’s Sway Calloway while on a promo tour for both his self-titled memoir, Will, which was released Nov. 9 and his new film King Richard (Nov. 19), where he showcases himself as Venus and Serena’s father.
“I was thinking about that. Me and L, we’re talking about doing one,” revealed Will Smith in a recent taping of Sway’s Universe. The only reason the 53-year-old Grammy Award-winner hasn’t been able to line it up, he revealed, was because he had been working on his book.
Even still, the ‘90s hitmaker was sure not to get ahead of himself, admitting LL would probably come out on top. “L is going to body me,” he told Sway.
The last Verzuz event took place last night (Nov. 18) between legendary R&B singers Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.
Could Will Smith and LL be next?
