Ja Morant Vows to Continue 'Grenade' Celebration 'Until Somebody Has a Problem With It'

After $75,000 fine for finger-gun gestures, Grizzlies star now mimics throwing grenades as Charles Barkley calls his behavior "immature."

If you thought a fine would get Ja Morant to tone down his on-court celebrations, you must be new here. The Memphis Grizzlies star has simply switched his celly—trading his finger-gun gesture for something even more explosive.

"That's my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it, and I'll find another one," Morant told reporters before Thursday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, doubling down on his new signature move despite criticism. The move was seemingly even a joke between Dirk Nowitzki and reporter Taylor Rooks as they chatted during a game.

After being fined $75,000 last week for making finger-gun gestures during games, Morant debuted his “grenade” celebration during Tuesday's win over the Charlotte Hornets. The celebration involves miming pulling a pin with his teeth, tossing the imaginary explosive into the crowd, and covering his ears for the mock explosion.

NBA legends weren't impressed. During TNT's broadcast, Kenny Smith didn't hold back: "He has a history that maybe he should leave the celebrations where people might die alone." Charles Barkley took it further, saying, "I know one person's happy right now. Taylor Jenkins ain't got to deal with this crap," referencing the former Grizzlies coach who was dismissed in late March.

When asked about the fines, Morant offered a cryptic response: "I wasn't surprised, just showing what's pretty much been evident for the last two years."

This controversy follows a turbulent period for the two-time All-Star, who was suspended twice in 2023 for appearing in social media videos brandishing actual firearms, including a 25-game ban to start the 2023-24 season.

As Memphis battles for playoff positioning, currently sitting seventh in the Western Conference with just two games remaining, all eyes will be on Morant's next celebration—and whether the NBA will have something to say about it.
