Lizzo Reveals How Boyfriend Myke Wright Helped Shift Her View on ‘Weight Loss’
Lizzo is letting go of outdated language surrounding her body image and crediting her boyfriend for the idea.
During an appearance on “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” earlier this week, the “Still Bad” singer got candid about her personal journey with what she coined “weight release” and how her longtime partner and media personality, Myke Wright, helped reframe the conversation for her.
“My man, he's so funny,” Lizzo said with a laugh. “He was the one that brought it to my attention at first. Because at first I was like, 'Oh my gosh I lost five pounds' and he was like, 'Where did it go?'”
The singer admitted that initially she didn’t quite get it. “I was mad at him, I was like, 'Why would he say that?' but he was like, 'Where did it go?'” she explained. Regardless, the message stuck.
Over time, Lizzo started to reconsider how she spoke about her body. “I didn’t want to lose anything—I wanted to win,” she said.
Growing up, she said, the way the media talked about people’s bodies shaped how she thought about her own. “Be careful with your words because it can affect somebody in ways you don't even know,” Lizzo added. “Even me releasing the weight has affected people and I take that seriously.”
As for her relationship, Lizzo made it clear, “I am very much in love with Myke. 100 percent,” during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in December 2022. “There’s nobody else I’m going to be with for the rest of my life.”
