Amy Sherald Brings Her Powerful Portraits to The Whitney Museum for Her First-Ever NYC Solo Show
Celebrated portrait artist Amy Sherald is bringing her signature vision to New York City.
Her first solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, American Sublime, opens this week and is set to run through August 10, 2025—offering an intimate look at nearly 50 of her most striking paintings.
Rooted in American Realism, Sherald’s work paints everyday Black Americans with extraordinary care, highlighting what she calls the “wonder of what it is to be a Black American.” Best known for her powerful portraits of former First Lady Michelle Obama and the late Breonna Taylor, the presentation will trace her artistic journey from 2007 to today.

“Sherald’s contemplative subjects appear most concerned with their own interiority, prioritizing their own peace and self-realization over how others might perceive them and the shackles of history, though they are inevitably impacted by both,” the museum shared in a statement.
The exhibition also features Four Ways of Being, a newly commissioned work displayed on the exterior of the museum’s Horatio Street building.
American Sublime is now open at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC. Visit whitney.org for ticket information.
