Police Union Slammed For Saying Colin Kaepernick's Rikers Island Visit Will Only Encourage Inmates To Attack Correction Officers
Colin Kaepernick visited New York City's Rikers Island to speak with inmates on Tuesday, as reported by the New York Daily News in an exclusive story.
But not everyone was thrilled by the free-agent quarterback's presence.
That's because a police union told the newspaper that Kaepernick's visit will only trigger inmates into attacking correction officers. Really!? How!?
"This will only encourage inmates to continue to attack Correction Officers at a time when we need more protection," Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, told the Daily News. "Once again, correction officers find themselves caught in Mayor de Blasio's political con-game. This is yet another brazen display of the hypocrisy of this mayor who pretends to support us in public, yet does everything possible to jeopardize our security in private."
Wow.
Peter Thorne, Correction Department spokesperson, didn't see Kaepernick's visit to Rikers like that at all.
“Colin Kaepernick visited Rikers [Tuesday] to share a message of hope and inspiration,” Thorne told the Daily News.
Upon learning about the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association's charge that Kaepernick visiting and speaking with detainees "will only encourage inmates to continue to attack correction officers," Twitter erupted with these reactions.
To sum up the police union's statement in a few words ...
Absolutely ridiculous and ignorant.
Twitter had to collectively give this police union the Ice Cube face
Shaking our damn heads.
And people wanted to know why this police union felt so threatened by Kaepernick's presence?
Also, how in the world could they come to that conclusion?

To that last question, people pulled up with these answers
The union deserves the sarcasm from the second tweet.
And that last tweet ... say that again!
And then there's this ...
Hmm...
if this union felt so concerned about Kaepernick showing up at Rikers, people couldn't help but wonder...
Wouldn't that have been more ideal than giving a statement to a newspaper?

At the end of the day, people are encouraging Kaepernick to keep using his activism for a higher calling, regardless of who doesn't like it
Imagine that...
