Beauty Review: A Conditioning Hair Mask Spiked With Whiskey... and We Like It
Maybe you went a little overboard with the highlights this summer. Or maybe those weekly blowouts left you with a fried texture. Or, if you’re like me, you spent your summer evenings binging on Netflix rather than lovingly moisturizing your strands. (It’s never just one more episode, is it?)
Nonetheless, it’s fall and your hair is screaming for some TLC! A little science lesson: hair strands are made from a strong protein called keratin and with wear and tear (daily styling, chemical processing, etc.), those protein bonds break down, causing split ends and breakage. One way to diminish this is to use a protein-rich deep conditioning treatment to fill in those weak spots. My natural curls were dry and experiencing a little more breakage than normal. But for fine-haired gals like myself, most salon protein treatments are too harsh, leaving my strands even drier and more prone to damage.
Bekura Whiskey Vanilla Restoring Hair Soak ($20) delivers a gentle protein-style treatment for damaged hair using a rejuvenating blend of all-natural quinoa protein, pumpkin and hemp seed oils, vanilla oil and a malt extract derived from real Scottish whiskey. (Did somebody say #turnup?) But don’t fret — the smell of whiskey is super mellow and sweet, with overtones of vanilla and honey — the perfect scent for fall. I leave it on for at least 20 minutes every week while I run errands or do chores around the house, and my tangle-prone hair is manageable and soft when I rinse out. The consistency is like a thick hair butter, so a little really goes a long way.
I love this on my natural hair, but I’d bet this hair soak would be just as good on relaxed hair, too. Try it, and let me know what you think in the comments below.
