Selena Gomez Calls On Fans To Stream 'Rare' Album So She Can Beat Roddy Ricch
Just one week after emerging Compton-bred rapper Roddy Ricch faced off against pop star Justin Bieber in a heated battle for the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 index, the MC will now face off with pop princess Selena Gomez.
Selena recently dropped her third studio LP, Rare, and the album will make its official chart debut on the Billboard 200 chart next week. As the final numbers continue to roll in, the actress-singer has enlisted her fan base, the Selenators, to help give her newly released project a boost on the charts.
According to Complex, Selena’s album is leading this week's sales by a slim margin, but she’s at risk of being bumped to second place by none other than Roddy.
As you’ll recall, Roddy’s “The Box” managed to fend off Justin after the Canadian pop star essentially tried to game the system for his new single, “Yummy.” His efforts succeeded to no avail as it only ignited Roddy’s fans to double down on their streaming efforts. As it stands, “The Box” still reigns supreme as the No. 1 song in the U.S. after its resurgence.
On Thursday (Jan. 16), Selena posted a minute-long video to her Instagram Stories wherein she shared with her fans that she just found out her record is in a tight race “with another incredible artist” for next week's top spot. She then asked her fans to stream and listen to Rare on all platforms so she can top Roddy’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial (which is the album “The Box” is from).
“I told people before that, you know, it's not about numbers for me, but I would love for the most important album I've ever released to become No. 1,” she said in the video. “This is, again, something I've dreamed about for so long. But, regardless, I just hope that you guys are enjoying it and that it's something that you all can just enjoy and have. So, no worries. Either way, I'm happy."

On the contrary, hip-hop fans sprung into full-streaming mode for Roddy, challenging Selena over her comments, especially given that her remarks come right after Justin Bieber tried to pull similar antics.

Roddy Ricch simply issued Selena the same message he sent Justin, tweeting, “stream ‘rare’ by Selena Gomez.”
Meanwhile, we’ll just have to wait and see who will come out on top next week.
