In a landmark acquisition, The University of Houston Libraries has obtained The DJ Screw Sound Recordings, comprising over a thousand records owned and used by the legendary hip hop producer.
The records were instrumental in the creation of the infamous "Screw Tapes," which are among the earliest known examples of the "chopped and screwed" music genre the Houston-native invented.
The majority of the records, which span a wide swath of genres and include rare 12-inches, were donated by Screw's father, Robert Earl Davis Sr., and the John and Rebecca Moores Endowed Library Fund.
The archive will be made available to researchers in 2013, and part of the collection will be placed on view for the public as part of an exhibit called "DJ Screw and the Rise of Houston Hip Hop," which will open March 19, 2012, at the M.D. Anderson Library, according to 29-95.
