John Legend Opens Up About Public Fallout With Kanye Over His Donald Trump Support

“I don’t think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump’s he likes.”

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen recently opened up about the state of their relationship with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian-West, following the Chicago rapper’s controversial support of Donald Trump. The commander-in-chief has been a splinter in the friendship of the two couples, as John and Chrissy have been very vocal critics of Trump. Things got rocky in 2016 after West publicly endorsed Trump. Since then, Legend has continued to “love” Ye from afar, although he recently admitted the two “were never the closest of friends” in an interview with his model wife for Vanity Fair.

  • West and Legend go way back after the producer-turned-rapper worked on the EGOT winner’s first album. “I’m not trying to disown Kanye,” Legend explained, “because I still love him and love everything we’ve done together creatively.”

  • Legend went on to reflect on the texts he sent West during the uproar over his MAGA-hat moment. Back then, the singer had reached out to West privately to caution him against aligning himself with the polarizing White House occupant. In turn, Ye took it upon himself to post screenshots of their conversation on Twitter, justifying it was an example of the people around him trying to control his thoughts.

  • Thinking back to that moment, Legend confessed, “I think what was always challenging about it was Kanye has never been political… I don’t think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump’s he likes. He just kind of embraced Trump’s blow-it-all-up spirit and the energy of himself being counter-cultural in supporting him.”

  • Legend and Teigen both admitted to feeling conflicted over Kardashian-West’s recent criminal justice activism, as the reality star has worked with Trump and the White House on several different occasions regarding criminal justice reform. She recently used her platform to rally support for inmate Rodney Reed, who will be executed on November 20.

“It's a cheap win for [Trump],” Legend said of the meeting between 45 and Kardashian-West, although he acknowledged that ultimately it’s a win for the “real people with families… even if the clemency is won through his celebrity-whore tendencies,” adding Trump is still “locking kids in cages and [is] a terrible human being.”

  • As for Teigen’s thoughts on the matter, the model explained, “to be able to go in there and put whatever you hate about him aside to do this greater good for this person? I don't know if I could physically muster that smile and handshake.”
