Jordan Chiles Breaks Silence After She Was Ordered to Return Olympic Bronze Medal
Jordan Chiles broke her silence after being stripped of her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics and given to her Romanian competitor, Ana Bărbosu.
On Thursday (Aug. 15), the gymnast posted a statement on Instagram. She started by expressing her gratitude for the love and support she’s been receiving from her family, teammates, coaches, fans, USAG, and the USOPC. “I have no words. This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow to me and everyone who has championed my journey,” Chiles wrote. “To add to the heartbreak, the unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this sport and I am so proud to represent my culture and country,” Chiles said.
She continued, “I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career. Believe me when I say I have had many. I will approach this challenge as I have others – and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing.” Check out her full statement below:
This news comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that U.S. coach Cecile Landi was four seconds too late to request an inquiry to review the 23-year-old’s score during the 2024 Paris Olympics floor exercise final. The inquiry was accepted at the time. However, Chiles was underscored. Her fixed score placed her in third, earning her the bronze medal.
