Biden Cancels Student Loans for 150,000 More Borrowers
President Joe Biden’s latest move in the ongoing student loan debt battle has provided relief to more than 150,000 borrowers.
A White House press release announced on Monday (Jan. 13) that the newly approved relief covers over 80,000 borrowers defrauded by their schools, more than 60,000 borrowers with total and permanent disabilities, and over 6,000 public service workers.
This now brings the total number of borrowers whose debt has been canceled during his administration to over 5 million.
Biden touted the milestone in a statement, emphasizing that his administration has canceled more student loan debt “than any other administration in history.”
While his original plan for broad student loan forgiveness was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2023, Biden’s team shifted its focus to fixing and expanding existing programs to help borrowers.
The administration has since prioritized easing the burden for some of the most vulnerable groups, including long-term borrowers, public service workers, and victims of predatory schools.
The President also highlighted updates to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and improvements to income-driven repayment plans, both of which have streamlined the forgiveness process for qualified borrowers.
