Soul Train Awards 2023: Coco Jones Hopes to 'Do My Culture Justice' as This Year's 'Best New Artist'
Coco Jones was crowned “Soul Train Awards” 2023 “Best New Artist.” The seasoned singer and actress, wearing a beautiful brown leather ensemble, accepted the honor during the R&B and soul music ceremony hosted by Emmy-nominated actress, singer, and host Keke Palmer.
The “Double Back” singer reflected on the ceremony’s notable history, sharing, “I hope that I can do my culture justice, continue to be passionate and break down barriers and create more platforms for us like ‘Soul Train Awards’ has done for so long,” Jones shared during her acceptance speech. “I’m so honored,” she added before going on to thank her mother, family, and team for their support.
The 25-year-old star emerged victorious among a pool of talented acts that included Ambré, Ayra Starr, Doechii, Flo, Fridayy, Tyla, and Wanmore. She initially garnered attention in 2010, following her appearance on the singing competition “Radio Disney's Next Big Thing” and later projects like the movie “Let It Shine.”
In 2022, Jones signed a deal with Def Jam and achieved musical success with the release of “ICU” from her fifth EP titled “What I Didn’t Tell You.” Currently, she's starring in “Bel-Air,” a dramatic adaptation of the beloved '90s series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
