Judge Mathis Announces His Son Greg Mathis Jr. Is Engaged
Congratulations are for the eldest son of Judge Mathis on his new engagement!
Earlier this week, the beloved TV judge announced that his son Greg Mathis Jr. and his partner Elliott Cooper got engaged. The proud dad shared the exciting news in a post on Instagram.
“My son @gregmathisjr and his partner @elliott_coopr got engaged last night!” he wrote in the caption. “So happy they are able to live their life in happiness. Congrats guys. Love ya much!”
The post featured the newly engaged couple sitting at a table and other frames of the soon-to-be-grooms photographed with family and friends.
The comment section was filled with support from loved ones and fans of the famous TV personality. Mathis Jr. wrote, “Love you” followed by a red heart emoji, and his fiancé added, “Thank you!! Love ya too.” Jr.’s younger brother, Amir Mathis, chimed in with double red heart emojis.
As we can see, the Mathis family is a caring bunch, as depicted in their reality TV series Mathis Family Matters. During an episode of season one in 2022, Jr. used the platform to come out publicly as part of the LGBTQ+ community, something he said was “scary.”
“It's been scary because, A, the vulnerability of it all and just putting yourself out there — I had a lot of people that were questioning why I would do it, why it was so important, why I had to make a big announcement,” he explained on Today.
He continued, "When I was growing up, I didn't see anyone that I could necessarily identify with, and I think it really does save lives and really, representation is everything," he said. "So when people see me and they see my journey, I hope they can identify with it and feel more comfortable in themselves."
Jr.'s coming out journey was also filled with fear of judgment that led him to keep his identity a secret to protect his father's longstanding career. As Judge Mathis reflected on that affective episode, he told BET.com it was "one of the more emotional segments" on the show, especially since Jr. had come out to their family at 18.
“I asked him why hasn't he told folks — he said he was worried about how it would affect my career, can you believe that?” he said. “That really caused me some emotional feelings because the essence of that statement was that I will deny who I am dad for many, many years to protect your career. That was very compelling to me.”
