Watch 10-Year-Old Promise Sawyers' Viral Video, Where She Gracefully Reads Her Natural Hair Bullies
Our little Black girls are embracing their crowns more and more every day, and we couldn't be prouder. And our latest inspiration comes from a Facebook video of a young girl sending a message to her bullies after being teased for her natural afro!
With discrimination against our natural hair finally being taken seriously and written into law in 2019, no ridicule of our tresses will be tolerated. 10-year-old Promise Sawyers is a perfect embodiment of this sentiment and wants her haters to know she's not letting anyone steal her joy. Period.
Check Out Promise Sawyers' Video After Being Bullied For Her Natural Hair!
A word! In the video, Promise explains that after being fulling embraced as the naturalista she is at her old school, "a lot of people had a lot of mean things to say" about her wearing her natural hair at her new school. But after getting inspiring words from her mother, Qui Daughtery, Promise decided she would go back to school with her afro looking bigger and better than ever. We love a confident queen.
After her Facebook video went viral, Promise was brought onto Kelly Clarkson's new talk show and was surprised by everyone's natural hair goals, Tracee Ellis Ross!
Tracee told an emotional Promise, "I saw your video and was so moved. Because your hair is an extension of your legacy," pointing to Promise's mom in the audience. "What you come from, everything that you are, and your beauty. And I'm so glad that you knew at 10 years old what it took me so long to learn about myself."
It's important that we instill the confidence in the next generation, like Qui Daughtery, so that they can respond to bullying of their hair, skin or anything else as gracefully as Promise Sawyers!
