BET Talks: Rapsody on Authenticity, Black Culture, and the Power of Music
Grammy-nominated rapper and songwriter Rapsody sat down with MiaBelle on BET Talks for an intimate conversation that explored her creative process, her deep connection to Black music, and her personal journey of self-discovery. Known for her poignant lyrics and soulful beats, Rapsody shared insights into the making of her music and how her personal experiences have shaped her artistry.
Embracing Self-Discovery Through Music
Rapsody spoke candidly about the balance between her public persona and her private self, Marlanna Evans. “Rapsody was there to protect Marlanna for a long time,” she said. “But Rapsody is just an extension of Marlanna. If I don’t choose myself, you don’t get the most authentic and the best Rapsody.”
Her journey of self-discovery began during her college years, where she learned to embrace independence. These experiences influenced her music, allowing her to craft songs that feel like snapshots of her life.
Authenticity as the Core of Creativity
For Rapsody, vulnerability and honesty are non-negotiable in her music. Drawing inspiration from Lauryn Hill, she noted, “She taught me how to be vulnerable, to be truthful, to be honest, how you can be both feminine and masculine at the same time.”
Her approach to music is rooted in storytelling that reflects her reality. “I look at albums as a snapshot of where you are in your life,” Rapsody said. “Whatever’s going on in my world, in my life, this is what my music is.”
