Mike Tyson and Jake Paul Promise Fireworks In Upcoming Super Fight
The upcoming fight between former undisputed heavyweight champion “Iron” Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) and current boxing sensation Jake “El Gallo de Dorado” Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sporting events of the summer. The fight will be an eight-round professional bout with two-minute rounds.
Set for Saturday, July 20 exclusively on Netflix, it will be streamed from the 80,000-seat capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Along with Tyson and Paul’s duel, undisputed super lightweight world champion Katie Taylor (23-1, 6 KOs) will defend her title over 10, two-minute rounds against unified featherweight world champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs). That bout is hailed as “the most anticipated rematch in women’s boxing history.”
At a press conference held at the renowned Apollo Theater in Harlem, on Monday (May 13), and hosted by noted combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani, Tyson and Paul spoke about how they came together to make the fight happen.
“It was a no-brainer,” Tyson said. “He [Paul] was a new up-and-coming guy on the scene, and I like shaking the sports world to its core and I'm doing it now. It's just something I want to do.”
Tyson also spoke to those who are questioning him for entering the ring at 57 years old.
“I'm beautiful. That's all I can say,” Tyson responded as the crowd laughed and cheered.
“We’re friends outside of the ring. But once he’s in that ring, he has to fight like his life depended on it because it will,” Tyson added
Paul, whose Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) is promoting the event, spoke about the significance of the fight.
“Yeah no, he was game. I think he's always wanted to do this. This has been a long time coming. We've been calling each other out for years and we finally got to make it happen on Netflix, the biggest platform in the world, and things just keep on getting bigger and better. The co-main event [Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano]... I mean this is quite literally history that we're looking at right here.”
“Mike wanted this. Mike wanted it to be a pro-fight. He wants the war, and so I respect that. I respect him for taking this fight, for stepping up to try to put an end to me because that's what all these fighters have been trying to do is end the YouTuber and if Mike can do that, then he's a hero,” Paul continued.
When asked if Taylor would consider a trilogy with Serrano, she said that she is just zeroed in on the upcoming fight and not giving her attention to anyone or anything else.
“The trilogy is not on my mind right now,” Taylor explained.”I beat her the first time, and I plan on beating her the second time.”
Although she suffered from a serious eye injury in her previous fight with Taylor, Serrano is looking forward to making history as she has moved up three weight classes for the fight.
“I think it was always going to happen because Katie and my name are always going to be attached to each other no matter what, and I'm glad to be a part of this to be alongside Katie Taylor,” Serrano said. “She's a great champion, but we're going to go out there and prove to the world that we deserve this platform.”
