Former Officer Accused of Rape and Sexual Assault Against Black Women
While fired police officer Daniel Holtzclaw was assigned to patrol and keep Oklahoma City safe, he allegedly preyed on and raped 12 Black women and one girl in the northeast area of the city.
He is currently on trial for a total of 36 lewd acts, including one count of rape and acts of exposing himself, sodomy and forcing women to perform oral sex between 2013 and 2014. This week, a jury was selected in the case but none of the jurors are African-American, which is eyebrow-raising due to the fact that all of the victims are Black.
The details of the assaults given by the victims are disturbing. Previously, a woman reported that Holtzclaw picked her up and took her to an abandoned area in Oklahoma City, ordering her to perform oral sex or she would be taken to jail, AP reports. The youngest victim said that Holtzclaw groped her while searching for drugs. He then took things even further by removing her pants and raping her. Witnesses began testifying in the case on Tuesday and Holtzclaw's attorney claims the accusers' stories were not credible because they had histories of past drug use or criminal activity.
“Each and every one of these people have street smarts like you can’t even imagine,” said Scott Adams, representing Daniel Holtzclaw. He later painted the 28-year-old as a upstanding officer who cared about his community.
“He was proud of what he did,” Adams said. “He was proud to wear the badge."
