Derek Luke Blasts Instagram Trolls Hating on His Interracial Marriage
Derek Luke doesn't seem like the type who would lash out on social media, but the typically level-headed actor lost his cool on Monday when he noticed his comments were flooded with people taking issue with the fact that he is in an interracial marriage.
Responding to trolls expressing their displeasure that Sophia Luke, his wife of 17 years, is not Black, Luke wrote a lengthy Instagram post calling out the haters. "I never usually entertain the opinions of others because everyone is entitled to they're [sic] own opinion. (Positive or Negative)," he began. "But we're in the year of 2015 & when should it be a 'problem' to date outside of your race? Why is that an issue AGAIN? I'm doing the unusual & going through my comments & the comments I see about my wife being another race is bugging me out."
He continued, "Who one chooses to date is that persons business. Instead of focusing on (Happiness) & (pure Love) for some reason some folks are still focused on (Color). Doesn't make any sense to me. But I guess that's the ignorance of OTHERS."
Luke wrapped up by imploring others to check themselves before they comment. "'My wife may not be Black but she is mine. And she's mine with a heart of gold. People are so quick to judge but can't even distinguish the difference of another's race," he said. "Sophia Luke is Hispanic. She's not white, she's not black, she's not Chinese, she's Hispanic," he said, adding, "And she's mine!!"
The backlash would be surprising were it not for the fact that nothing on the Internet shocks us these days, but Luke was justified in lashing out at the ignorant comments in his feed. Hopefully, his powerful words will put those haters in their place.
