LeBron James and Son Bronny Make History by Sharing the Court in Lakers Preseason Game
Last night (Oct. 6), LeBron James and his eldest son, Bronny James Jr., took the court together for the first time, offering fans a glimpse of the historic milestone that awaits when the NBA season begins later this month.
In a preseason matchup, the pair played side by side in the Los Angeles Lakers' 118-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns at Acrisure Arena. This memorable occasion marked a significant achievement, making them the first father-son pair to compete together in an NBA game, coinciding with Bronny's 20th birthday.
“It’s surreal. I’m very honored that I get to be part of history,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said, according to The Athletic. Following the game, LeBron expressed his joy on X (formerly Twitter), exclaiming, "WOW, THAT WAS SURREAL!!"
In June, the Lakers selected Bronny with the No. 55 pick in the NBA draft after one season at the University of Southern California. During an episode of "The Shop," which was shot in Paris during the 2024 Olympic Games, LeBron revealed that he does not want his son to call him ‘dad’ during team activities. "We already laid that down. He cannot call me 'dad' in the workplace," He said. "Once we leave the practice facility and the gates close, I could be 'dad' again. In the car, if we ride together, at home, I can be 'dad.' He got to call me like '2-3,' 'Bron' or, you know, 'GOAT' if he wants to. It's up to him.”
The NBA legend continued, “It's easy for me because I've been calling him 'Bronny' for so long. It's not like I've been calling him, 'Hey son.’ But it's going to be the adjustment for him. We cannot be running down the court, and he be like, 'Dad, push the ball up! Dad, I'm open! Dad, come on!' No, you cannot do that.”
