Outrage Sparked After Broadcast Video Shows Black Little Leaguer Being Covered In Cotton

The video aired during ESPN’s MLB Little League Classic, but soon attracted criticism over how the boy was being treated by his teammates.

A video has gone viral of a Black child having cotton-like material put in his hair by white teammates.

The image aired on Sunday evening (August 21) during ESPN’s MLB Little League Classic, a game between the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox staged in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which is also where the Little League World Series is played. An ESPN commentator can be heard saying, “That’s just Little Leaguers being Little Leaguers.”

The Black player, whose age is unknown,  is seen with a blank expression as his white teammates affixed a cotton-like substance to his hair. Many who viewed it expressed concern about what seemed to be an act of racial insensitivity.

Little League International said in an Aug. 22 statement, “During the broadcast of the MLB Little League Classic, a Midwest player was shown with filling from a stuffed animal given away at the game on his head. After speaking with the team, as well as reviewing photos, multiple players on the Midwest Region team were taking part in this while enjoying the game. As only one player appeared on the broadcast, Little League International understands that the actions shown could be perceived as racially insensitive.

“We have spoken with the player’s mother and the coaches, who have assured us that there was no ill-intent behind the action shown during the broadcast,” the statement added.

“We understand the sensitivities and are in touch with Little League organizers about the situation,” ESPN said in a statement Tuesday morning.
