2023 NAACP Image Awards: Here Are Some Of Our Favorite Moments From This Year’s Show
Hosted by Queen Latifah, the 54th NAACP Image Awards were celebrated Saturday (February 25, 2023) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Some of today’s brightest and hottest entertainers, activists and changemakers were highlighted and celebrated for their accomplishments and for representing the community in the best possible way. The night was a reminder of the importance celebrating and honor Black talent.
The entire show was amazing, but there were several moments that left us in awe. Amongst all of the winners, some surprising, some expected, and those who were honored for their political or community activism, here are some of our favorite moments from the star-studded show.
Queen Latifah Opens With A Song And Celebrating Ladies First
She hosts, sings, and raps. The Queen truly does it all and reminded us that she has the perfect voice for a snazzy jazz number to open the show.
Surprise! Brittney and Cherelle Griner Make First Public Appearance Together
"It feels so good to be here, especially with my beautiful, amazing wife and with all of y'all here today." — Brittney Griner, joined by her wife Cherelle Griner.
Kerry Washington Hands Her Bestie The Jackie Robinson Sports Award
Serena Williams' acceptance speech left us in even more awe of her skills than ever before. She's truly is an example of someone breaking stereotypes, following her passions, and open doors for athletes today and for generations to come.

Nicco Annan Wins for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series
Nicco Annan dedicated his award to every 40+ creative who "did not have space to be themselves." We finally feel seen.
Ben Crump Makes Us Believe

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union Introduce A New Era of Activism
In a powerful speech while accepting the President's Award, both Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union spoke of the demand for equality even though some of us in the Black community continue to fail to extend our advocacy to protect those who are most vulnerable. They both have chosen to use their platforms to advocate on behalf of LGBTQ+ youth in the name of their daughter, Zaya.
Will Smith Wins First Award Post Oscar Controversy
He may not have been there in person, but Will Smith, winning the award for "Best Actor" for his portrayal in the film, "Emancipation" proves you can always come home. It's his first major award since last year's "slap-gate incident" at the Academy Awards.
Wakanda Forever!
If there's one thing you can say about Director Ryan Coogler it is that he will always find a way to honor the late actor Chadwick Boseman. Accepting the award for NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion picture for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. was no exception. Coogler is making Black History today as Marvel Studios' youngest and first Black film director pulling in billions for the Black Panther films.

Angela Basset Did The Thing!
The credits rolling at the end could not stop the excitement for Angela Bassett as she accepts the last award of the night celebrating her as "Entertainer of the Year." She did the thing (a reference Ariana DeBose’s viral BAFTAs rap) and we cannot wait to see what she has in store next. Get 'em girl!
