Chance The Rapper Beautifully Broke Down The Lyrics To 'We Go High'
Chance the Rapper isn’t shy about proclaiming his love for his wife, Kirsten Corley — evident in the fact that he dedicated his “first” studio album, The Big Day, to their marriage. While many took the album’s stand-out track, “We Go High,” to be a nod to Michelle Obama’s famous words, the Grammy Award-winning rapper revealed that it’s an ode to his journey to becoming a better father and husband.
The 26-year-old recently sat down with Genius for their latest Verified episode (which aired on Thursday, October 17), where he broke down how the track was inspired by a rough patch in their relationship. Off the cuff, Chance candidly confesses he wasn’t “living right” after the fame and accolades came, which put a strain on his relationship with Corley.
“Me and my wife split and I started doing my thing…[I’d] just won all the Grammys. I’m thinking it’s cool and so I just started going out every night,” Chance admits.
According to the Coloring Book rapper, Corley began researching celibacy after being inspired by the teachings of preacher DeVon Franklin. Chance recalled coming home one day to find his wife reading the evangelical’s best-selling novel The Wait, which is about practicing celibacy to strengthen one’s relationship with their significant other.
“I was so mad when I saw The Wait at my house, dude,” Chance admitted. “When I saw my girl reading this book and I’m looking at [Franklin’s] smile on the front and I’m like, “Yo who is this nigga trying to ruin my s**t?”

“Got me pressed, tryin' to find DeVon Frank. Who the fuck rocked the boat? It’s gon’ sank. Shooting at me point blank with those blanks?,” he raps in “We Go High.”
