YSL Trial Verdict: Yak Gotti Found Innocent
In the culmination of Georgia's longest-running criminal trial, the jury reached verdicts for the final two defendants who opted against plea deals in the Young Slime Life (YSL) case. Deamonte Kendrick, professionally known as Yak Gotti, was acquitted of all charges. Shannon Stillwell, also known as SB, was found guilty solely of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The trial saw 28 individuals being charged, including prominent rapper Young Thug (Jeffery Williams), started in November 2023 under Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The state alleged that YSL functioned as a criminal street gang involved in various illegal activities.
Young Thug was arrested on May 9, 2022, at his Atlanta home. Two days later, fellow rapper Gunna (Sergio Kitchens) surrendered to authorities. The indictment accused YSL members of engaging in violent crimes across Atlanta, including the 2015 drive-by shooting that killed Donovan Thomas Jr., known as "Big Nut," allegedly orchestrated by defendants Stillwell and Kendrick due to gang rivalry.
Prior to the trial's conclusion, several defendants accepted plea deals, including prominent rapper Young Thug, who pleaded guilty in October 2024 and was released on probation.
Others, like rapper Gunna (Sergio Kitchens), entered Alford pleas, resulting in reduced sentences, according to the Associated Press.
The jury's recent verdicts mark the end of a complex and high-profile case that has significantly impacted Atlanta's rap community and brought attention to the intersection of art and alleged criminal activity.
