‘I Gotta Tell Him the Truth’: Lonzo Ball Gets Real about Brother LiAngelo’s NBA Future

While LaMelo dominates NBA scoring, middle Ball brother LiAngelo faces tough love conversation about his future.

On a lively episode of "Unapologetically Angel," a podcast hosted by WNBA star Angel Reese, Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball spoke candidly about their basketball journeys. The brothers, originally known for their high school stardom and reality TV fame, got real when discussing LiAngelo’s chances of making it in the NBA.

When the subject of LiAngelo potentially playing basketball overseas was brought up, the middle Ball brother and only one not on an NBA roster expressed his desire to continue to wait for an NBA opportunity. "I want to get a call from the G League just so I could open them doors up," he said, dreaming of one day teaming up with his brothers.

Lonzo, however, offered a dose of realism. "Being realistic, I'm his big brother. I gotta tell him the truth," he said before suggesting that starting overseas might be more feasible for LiAngelo. “I think his path is overseas. Should’ve been overseas killing.”

LiAngelo remained determined. "I only need a shot, bro. If they give me the shot, I feel like I'm going to do my thing." But Lonzo quickly fired back, emphasizing the difficulty of making an NBA roster despite success in the G League, the NBA’s development league.

“This is the problem I have: I feel like you got your shot in the [NBA] Summer League with the [Charlotte] Hornets,” he said. “You was killin’! So I’m like, yo, you got your shot, and you capitalized, and [you can see] how that don't translate.”

LiAngelo went on to mention that his NBA Summer League success led to a spot on the Hornets’ G League roster but admitted it didn’t result in enough playing time to show his potential. Lonzo then used that example to further emphasize his point. “You gonna sit in the ‘G’ on the bench, or you gonna go overseas to somewhere nice and go get 30 [points a game]?”

The Ball brothers' journey has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. Their youngest brother, LaMelo Ball, has been excelling with the Charlotte Hornets, boasting impressive stats this season and is second in the NBA in scoring with 31.1 points per game, behind only former league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Lonzo himself was drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017 and was seen as a player with tremendous potential. His career has been marred by injuries, particularly a persistent knee issue that has required multiple surgeries, but he's playing well for the Chicago Bulls this season.

The episode ended with a nod to Lonzo's generosity off the court, as host Angel Reese shouted him out for gifting her $2,000 to cover a $200 WNBA fine earlier this year.
