Massive Anti-Trump and Musk Protests Erupt Across the Globe
"Hands Off" protests opposing Trump's border enforcement and deportation policies, and other actions he’s taken have erupted globally.
In a bold show of global resistance, scores of people took to the streets over the weekend in what’s being called one of the largest coordinated protest actions in recent years. The demonstrations, reportedly stretching across more than 50 cities from Atlanta to Accra, took aim at two of the world’s most polarizing figures: former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk.
What started as a decentralized call to action online quickly grew into a global uprising fueled by frustration over the growing influence of authoritarian leaders and tech moguls who, critics say, are endangering democracy and disproportionately harming marginalized communities.
"They’re taking everything they can get their hands on—our health care, our data, our jobs, our services—and daring the world to stop them," the organizers said in the statement. "This is a crisis, and the time to act is now."
“We thought we would give people a chance to show their strong feelings about what the government is doing and how it is hurting lots and lots of people," a Washington organizer told NBC news. "I can’t even name all the ways things have gone off the rails," she said.
Trump proponents remain steadfast in supporting the President’s actions despite indications that the measures are proving to be harmful.
“He will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries,” The White House’s assistant press secretary said in a statement. “Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
Undocumented workers, federal workers and senior citizens are among some of the most vulnerable groups poised to be affected by Trump’s policies.
“We will not be silenced,” said Everett B. Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, rallied demonstrators in Washington. “We will not bow down. We’ll stand up and say, ‘Hands off our union.’ We’ll stand up and say, ‘Hands off our contract.’ We’ll stand up and say, ‘Hands off our democracy, hands off our freedom.”
