Beauty Influencer Briana Monique Faces Backlash Over ‘Nappy’ Hair Comments
Beauty influencer Briana Monique is under fire for ignorant comments she made about “nappy” African American hair during a recent review video.
Boasting nearly 344K subscribers on YouTube, Monique was reviewing a Black-owned hair product during which she can be heard saying she is “blessed to have her hair texture.” She also adds that her mother has always reminded her how lucky she is to have curly tresses and would see her mother struggle to maintain her “naps” growing up.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, sis – my momma got naps and she be struggling trying to find the right products for her hair because she is natural,” said Monique during the video, which was reposted to Twitter where it went viral.
The comments had many of her critics and followers calling her out for making the texturism remarks. One Twitter user wrote, “It’s internalized anti blackness that makes one feel that way. The way black women & men talk about our natural hair texture and put it down but elevate/praise the hair texture of non black women & mixed women is why she felt so free to say what she said.” Another wrote, “Wtf is African American hair.”
After the backlash, Briana Monique issued an apology, stating that she didn’t mean to imply that her hair was better than anyone else’s.
