Celebrity-Backed Bail Organization Shut Down After Bailed Out Suspect Shoots Man In Las Vegas

John Legend and Danny Glover are among the celebrities who reportedly support the organization.

A celebrity-backed organization that helps bail people out of jail is reportedly shutting down after being sued by a man who was shot days after the suspect was released on bail posted by the organization.

Rashawn Gaston-Anderson, for whom The Bail Project posted a $3,000 bond last December, was arrested on burglary charges and had a long criminal history, including attempted grand larceny, felony burglary, auto theft and carrying a concealed weapon.

Six days after he was released on bond, Gaston-Anderson allegedly shot a Las Vegas man, Chengyan Wang, seven times. He copped a plea on charges of attempted robbery, mayhem with enhancements for using a deadly weapon. TMZ reports that Gaston-Anderson was sentenced to 7 to 18 years.

Wang claims in his lawsuit that The Bail Project did not do its due diligence before posting Gaston-Anderson’s bail. The organization called the Wang shooting “an absolute tragedy,” TMZ reports.

The Bail Project also reportedly violated the law by not registering with the Nevada Division of Insurance before it posted bond for 51 people in Vegas since 2021.

According to TMZ, John Legend, Danny Glover and Richard Branson are among the celebs who back The Bail Project.
