Following the lead of lesbian singer Sara Quin of the indie pop duo Tegan & Sara, GLAAD has released a statement denouncing the lyrics and public statements of Tyler, the Creator as "hateful" and "irresponsible."
The LGBT rights organization was inspired to address the controversial Odd Future leader after Quin published an open letter earlier this week calling out members of the media who "defend, excuse and congratulate" Tyler despite the "vile" and "misogynistic" messages in his music.
Taking up the cause, GLAAD said the 20-year-old lightning rod's frequent line of defense that non-rap fans take his music too seriously and that he's "just a kid" don't pass muster.

"Using hateful language, regardless of the context, is unacceptable and in fact, very serious," the organization wrote. "Tyler’s attempts to be provocative as well as his indifference towards the consequences of his actions are irresponsible."
GLAAD said it would continue to monitor media coverage of Tyler. Recently, the organization called on fellow Californian rapper Lil B, who caused a stir by announcing his upcoming album will be called I'm Gay, to "use his platform in a positive way."
