Ava DuVernay Shares Sweet Story About Little Richard Tipping Her When She Was A Waitress
In the wake of Little Richard’s passing, celebrated filmmaker Ava DuVernay took to Twitter on Saturday (May 9), where she shared an heartwarming anecdote about the founding father of Rock music.
DuVernary revealed that the iconic singer would leave her a generous tip while she was working as a waitress and going to college in Los Angeles.
“I served soul food brunch to Little Richard every Sunday for a year while waitressing at Aunt Kizzy’s Back Porch in LA,” she wrote. “I was a college student. He tipped me a crisp $100 bill each week on a $75 breakfast with friends. This was 30 years ago. Helped me so much. God rest his soul.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from across social media in remembrance of Little Richard’s memory after news broke that the Rock and Roll pioneer died at the age of 87 from bone cancer this past weekend.
Beatles frontman Paul McCartney penned a heartfelt tribute on Twitter about how much of an influence Little Richard had on him as a musician.
“From 'Tutti Frutti' to 'Long Tall Sally' to 'Good Golly, Miss Molly' to 'Lucille', Little Richard came screaming into my life when I was a teenager,” he wrote along with a black-and-white photo of the Beatles, much younger, meeting Richard. “I owe a lot of what I do to Little Richard and his style; and he knew it. He would say, 'I taught Paul everything he knows’...I thank him for all he taught me and the kindness he showed by letting me be his friend.”
