Five Back To School Lessons You Can Learn From ‘College Hill: Celebrity Edition’
College Hill: Celebrity Edition merges the best of two worlds — reality TV shenanigans and college life. Season one features Nene Leakes, Ray J, DreamDoll, Lamar Odom, India Love, Stacey Dash, Big Freedia, and Big Slim (Slim Thug) at Texas Southern University, getting not just a taste of college life but HBCU life. While on campus, they get lessons in Black History, business and various topics as they earn certificates in multidisciplinary studies.
This obviously isn’t the full taste of the college experience. Still, anyone watching this season can learn some important things from the motley cast of characters that are good for anyone in the thick of back-to-school season, especially at the college level. Here are 5 lessons you can apply to your own school experience straight from College Hill: Celebrity Edition.
1. Be Open to New Experiences and People
Not everyone in this cast were acquainted with each other when they first came together, but they gave each other a chance, in most cases, and learned how to be a support system for each other. Even though they came from different backgrounds, they understood that they had more in common than they may have realized, especially since they were all brought together to better themselves through education.
2. You’re Not the Smartest Person in the Room
Being humble in any educational situation is important because you will likely walk away with something new. Ray J thought he didn’t need school because he was already a successful businessman and ended up failing. We’ll give him a break because he did try again, but school is about academics, scheduling, discipline, interpersonal relationships and other lessons you can apply in general life situations.
3. New People Means New Perspectives
Sometimes, meeting people from different backgrounds can be frustrating, but if you keep a cool head, you can teach people lessons about themselves and challenge their belief systems. Big Freedia, for example, taught people about pronouns and what it means to be a gender non-conforming person.
4. Looks Can Be Deceiving
In one instance, Dreamdoll got flack for how she dressed, but she made a good point: her appearance didn’t mean she wasn’t there to work. She proved that she meant business by showing up and doing the work. Sometimes, people shouldn’t focus so much on the superficial.
5. It’s Never Too Late For Education
A lot of the cast had some level of schooling. Still, they didn’t finish, so they decided to pursue a multidisciplinary studies certificate to come to educational completion and set examples for themselves and those who look up to them. It’s never too late to go to or return to school.
