Walmart and BET: Amplifying the HBCU Experience and Empowering Black Excellence with ‘For The Fellas’
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have long served as vital spaces for Black excellence, education, and community. Established before the Civil Rights Movement to provide opportunities for Black students excluded from predominantly white institutions, HBCUs continue to foster environments where students are empowered to embrace their authentic selves while earning degrees that shape promising futures. These institutions offer far more than academic preparation—they provide a sense of belonging, tradition, and a rich alumni network and advocates who uplift future generations.
Through a partnership with Walmart, BET highlights the vibrant and transformative HBCU experience. Walmart’s involvement goes beyond sponsorships—it's about empowering students with the motivation and resources to thrive despite challenges. The partnership aligns with Walmart’s mission to ignite the "spark" within HBCU students, encouraging them to focus on their goals and recognize that persistence will lead to long-term success.
Walmart’s commitment to celebrating Black excellence is evident in its involvement with events like the HBCU NY Classic, which it sponsored last month, and the National Battle of the Bands and SWAC events held in August. These gatherings are more than celebrations; they provide spaces for meaningful conversations, connections, and opportunities that support students on their academic and personal journeys.
One of the standout initiatives from the partnership is the For The Fellas (FTF) series, which showcases the stories of current and former HBCU students who exemplify success and resilience. A recent episode featured an engaging discussion with actor Woody McClain, a former Florida A&M University (FAMU) student; Rajah Caruth, a student at Winston-Salem State University and professional NASCAR driver; rapper Vic Mensa; and DJ Brian Henry, a Morehouse College graduate. Each shared how their HBCU experience shaped their lives and careers, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and committed to their aspirations.
“FAMU taught me culture. FAMU allowed me to be me,” McClain reflected. “That’s where I was able to join a dance crew. I never thought about dancing until I went to FAMU.” These personal insights demonstrate the power of HBCUs to foster growth beyond the classroom, helping students discover new talents and passions.
Through initiatives like For The Fellas, Walmart, and BET remain committed to empowering HBCU students with the resources, tools, and inspiration needed to excel during their academic journey and beyond. Stay tuned for upcoming episodes later this month, and follow Walmart on social media for more exciting HBCU events and activities designed to uplift the next generation of Black leaders.
