Video Footage Reveals Apparent Racially Motivated Shooting of Minneapolis Resident
A recently released video captures the moment Davis Moturi was shot by his neighbor, John Sawchak, while doing yard work in Minneapolis.
In the video obtained by CNN, Moturi is seen pruning a tree when a bullet strikes him, causing him to collapse to the ground. The shooting, which occurred last Wednesday (Oct. 23), left Moturi with a fractured spine and broken ribs. Sawchak, who surrendered to police early Monday (Oct. 28), now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, stalking, and harassment, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
Authorities say that the alleged shooter, Sawchak, had been verbally harassing Moturi for over a year, often using racial slurs. In May, Sawchak reportedly called Moturi “a Black bastard,” and in October, he allegedly escalated to “racially charged language.” The criminal complaint outlines how Moturi, who is Black, endured months of harassment from his white neighbor, with more than a dozen calls to the police about the ongoing abuse leading up to the violent incident.
During a press conference on Sunday (Oct. 27), Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara acknowledged the police department’s failure to act on Moturi’s complaints. “We failed this victim 100%,” he admitted, underscoring that officers “did not act urgently enough to prevent that individual from being shot.” The video’s release further spotlighted the department’s delayed response.
Public outrage has intensified, as many are frustrated that Sawchak was not arrested sooner, especially given his three active warrants, one of which was related to threats of violence against Moturi. City council members have since expressed dismay over the lack of police action, sparking renewed scrutiny of the department's response to cases involving racial harassment.
