Andrew Gillum has officially become the first African-American nominee for Florida governor after coming out victorious against favorite Gwen Graham and two well-funded business men vying for the state's Democratic nomination.

The progressive, Bernie Sanders co-signed candidate will face off against Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla) in the upcoming gubernatorial election this November.

Gillum is the Democratic party's third Black gubernatorial nominee this year with Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Ben Jealous in Maryland. In the history of the United States, there have only been two African-American men ever elected as governor, according to NPR.

If the Tallahassee mayor is successfully elected, he will be come the first Black governor in Florida's history.
