FBI Director Separates From 'Pal' Donald Trump and Asks DOJ to Publicly Deny Unsubstantiated Wiretapping Claims
On Saturday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted an unverified allegation that former President Obama wire tapped Trump Tower during the final month of the 2016 election. Although several Trump supporters and staffers have come forward to ask for an investigation into these claims, officials from intelligence agencies have denied such an order ever took place.
FBI Director James Comey also came forward to request the Department of Justice to publicly deny Trump’s claim about a wiretap. However, the department has not yet released a statement rejecting the president’s assertion.
Comey’s request not only comes as a move to keep the allegations made by the president in check, but it also serves as a way to protect the FBI from appearing to have broken the law, reported the New York Times.
As the days have moved forward, Trump has shown no signs of backing down from his egregious claim that have no real evidence to back it up. Representatives from Obama’s administration have denied Trump’s claim by citing Obama’s cardinal rule to not use executive power to interfere with a DOJ investigation.
James Clapper, the former director of National intelligence, has denied that Obama ordered a wiretap of Trump's residence
Comey's rejection of Trump's claim comes as surprise as the two were considered to be friends
Additionally, Comey has told Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act courts several times that he had reason to believe Trump was operating under Russian intelligence
