Tragic: Woman and Her Four Grandkids Killed During Texas Floods
A 62-year-old woman and her four young grandchildren passed away after being swept away in a flash flood in their Palestine, Texas home. Six to ten other homes in the neighborhood are heavily damaged after the flash flood occurred late Friday night.
A family member who identified the victims as Lenda Asberry, 9-year-old Voniyaejah Johnson, 8-year-old Devonte Johnson, 7-year-old Von Anthony Watkins, and 6-year-old Jamonica Johnson. "The water just ame up too fast," he said.
A resident of the ravaged cul-de-sac said, "The street was full of mud, so the water just came up. With the enormous amount of rain we had, we had people tell us that within minutes, that water was waste deep." He spoke to NBC about the tragic discovery of the five bodies hours later. "We had fire and other city workers out looking for thenand once the water receded, we found them," he said.
The entire neighborhood has been emptied, but now that the water has gone residents are returning to see if they can salvage any of their damaged property.
The family, on the other hand, will have to try and rebuild from this tragic loss.
Many areas of Texas have been affected by heavy rains and flooding in past weeks. In Houston, 5 have died, thousands of homes have been damaged, and $5 billion worth of damage have already occurred.
