Raynette Turner Is the Fourth Black Woman to Die in Jail in July
Another African-American woman has been found dead in a jail cell, this time in Mount Vernon, New York, according to ABC 7. Raynette Turner is the fourth Black woman this month to die under similar circumstances as Sandra Bland, Ralkina Jones and Kindra Chapman. The mother of eight was found unresponsive Monday afternoon in Mount Vernon, New York, on Monday night.
Her family wants answers. "All I know is my wife is dead and no one is saying anything," said Herman Turner, her husband, according to ABC 7.
Turner was awaiting to be arraigned for a shoplifting charge before she died. She was arrested Saturday afternoon after being accused of stealing from a wholesale store called Restaurant Depot. After complaining of feeling ill, she was taken to a hospital and treated for hypertension before she was released and returned to a cell Sunday night.
Around 2 a.m. on Monday morning, Turner was fingerprinted and returned to her cell. But when guards went to bring Turner for her court appearance, she was found unresponsive. Turner was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
Local authorities are carrying out the investigation. This story is still developing.
