New Video Shows NYPD Choking Another Restrained Black Man
In the wake of the controversial choking and death of Eric Garner this past week, a new video has emerged showing New York Police Department officers using the same banned practice that killed the Staten Island father of six.
On the afternoon of July 14 at a Harlem subway stop, one of two uniformed NYPD cops punched a man directly in the face several times and placed him in a textbook chokehold, after the man refused to place his hands behind his back for an arrest. The new video, which was shared on Facebook, also shows drops of blood on the tiled floor beneath the man’s head.
A number of bystanders yelled at the officers, scolding them for their actions. “This is not nice!” said one bystander. “Don’t punch him!” said another. “There ain’t no need for no punching."
The NYPD would not release the victim’s name or the officers’ names, according to DNAinfo. However, a spokesperson told the publication that the incident is currently under review by internal affairs.
Chokeholds were outlawed in the NYPD in 1994, but a New York Times report says that punishment is rare for the officers who use them on suspects.
