Kerry Washington, Laverne Cox Earn Emmy Nods

OITNB star makes history as first transgender person to receive nomination.

Kerry Washington, Laverne Cox and Idris Elba are just some of the Black actors nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards this year! The Scandal star and new mom will have her second chance at Best Actress in a Drama Series this year, after she was snubbed for the win last year. Washington's co-stars Joe Morton and Kate Burton were also recognized in the supporting actor categories.
Elba earned a Best Actor in a Drama Series nod for his work in Luther. The actor will go up against his fellow countryman and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, nominated for Dancing on the Edge, in the category. On the comedy side, Don Cheadle received a nod for his work in House of Lies.
Cicely Tyson was recognized with a nomination in the Lead Actress in a Mini-Series or Television Movie for The Trip to Bountiful, while the program is also up for Best Television Movie. HBO's Tremé received a nod in the Best Mini-Series category.
Netflix's groundbreaking drama series Orange Is the New Black also had a great year. Lead actress Taylor Shilling got a Best Actress nod while scene-stealers Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox each received supporting nominations. Cox makes history today as the first transgender actress to be nominated for an Emmy Award.

Angela Bassett
also scored a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role in the mini-series American Horror Story: Coven and Andre Braugher was recognized once again for his supporting role on the comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
