Kevin Hart: " Real Husbands of Hollywood Will Be What Chappelle's Show Was"
Kevin Hart is about to launch another laugh assault on comedy audiences everywhere with BET’s new original series Real Husbands of Hollywood, which is based on the popular viral skits that debuted during the 2011 BET Awards. The very busy comedian tells BET.com why he compares the series to Chappelle’s Show. Plus, he dishes on what fuels his mock show beefs with his Real Husbands of Hollywood co-stars: Nick Cannon, Boris Kodjoe and Robin Thicke.
You’ve been very busy this year filming several projects that are slated for release in 2013, could you share what some of them are?
I’m getting ready to do a movie called Write Along that’s with [producer] Will Packer and [director] Tim Story — I star opposite Ice Cube in that one. Another movie I’m doing is called Let Me Explain — my standup special, which I taped during two sold out shows in Madison Square Garden in November, that will be headed to theaters. Also, I’m about to do Think Like a Man 2. I’ll be doing Grudge Match with Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone. I have an untitled project with Seth Rogan. We’re also working on a cartoon that I’m producing and funding and, last but not least, I'm also touring.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of work. When do you sleep?
There’s no such thing. I just gave you my rest time during this interview. [Laughs]
First up is your highly anticipated new BET TV series Real Husbands of Hollywood. The skits were hilarious.
I can honestly go on record saying this show will be what Chappelle's Show was for Comedy Central. Comedy Central was a great network but Chappelle's Show took it to a completely different level. Other shows got bigger because so many viewers were watching the Chappelle reruns. For BET, the Real Husbands of Hollywood has that same potential.
Give us the breakdown on the show.
There’s nothing like it on television. It’s a mock reality show with a Curb Your Enthusiasm-feel — with me being that Larry David type. Every actor in it is not afraid to make fun of themselves. It stars Nick Cannon, Duane Martin, Boris Kodjoe, Robin Thicke and myself. Then Nelly, Trey Songz, Faizon Love and Cedric the Entertainer are part of the many people who come by to do [guest star] favors. Mariah Carey is doing one, so is Shane Mosley. It’s mock reality but we’re treating it like it’s real.
Are there any BFFs or rivalries between the husbands that we can anticipate?
Nick and I don’t like each other, but it stems from the movie Drumline. There’s a flashback of Nick and I playing the drums for the final part of the film and I drop the stick and he held on. Then it cuts back to me and I’m like, “I haven’t liked you since. I don’t like you.” I’m jealous of Boris because he models and I don’t think he’s that attractive. Robin, I think that his singing career is a fluke and Paula Patton really wants me. It’s so much nonsense that we’ve made it appear to be real. I think it’s really going to be something to see. We have a special thing and I’m really excited to be apart of it.
Real Husbands of Hollywood is scheduled to air on BET in January 2013.
