Drake Surprises Fans With New Mixtape And Summer Album Announcement
Drake came through for his fans with some new music to tide them over until the release of his highly anticipated follow-up to 2018’s Scorpion.
He has steadily been building up anticipation for his sixth studio album over these last fews months, dropping off tracks like “When to Say When,” “War” and “Chicago” in March. Most recently, the OVO honcho took over TikTok with his surprise jingle “Toosie Slide,” spawning the #ToosieSlideChallenge.
And last night (April 30) Drake unveiled in an Instagram post that he was releasing an entire mixtape. In that same post, Drizzy also gave a status update on his as-of-yet untitled album.
“My brothers @oliverelkhatib @ovonoel put together a lot of the songs people have been asking for (some leaks and some joints from SoundCloud and some new vibes) DARK LANE DEMO TAPES out everywhere at midnight,” he announced, adding “also my 6th STUDIO ALBUM DROPPING SUMMER 2020!!! Lucky number 6...soon fwd.”
Composed of 14 songs, the mixtape features appearances from Chris Brown, Giveon, Young Thug, Fivio Foreign, and Future. The release also came embedded with Drake’s long-teased collaboration with Playboi Carti, “Pain 1993.”
While some of the songs included on the mixtape have floated around on the Internet, it could be an indication of what direction Drake is taking with his forthcoming album.
“I’m working on the album. I’ve been working on it for a while now,” he told Diddy during a recent Instagram Live session, according to Rolling Stone. “I remember the last time I had to sit down was when I tore my ACL. And I made a great album out of that. Obviously, God has us all inside the house right now sitting down, so the amount of focus I’m able to put into this album is probably way different it would’ve been.”
