Kanye West Is Bringing His Second ‘Mary’ Opera To New York

He recently premiered "Mary" at Art Basel in Miami.

New York Yeezy fans are in luck. Yesterday (Dec. 17), Kanye West said that he will be bringing his latest religious production, Mary, to the David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center this coming Sunday (Dec. 22). He unceremoniously published a promotional flyer for the announcement to his official Twitter account.

  • Ye recently debuted his second gospel-themed operatic experience to much fanfare on the final day of Art Basel in Miami. Mary is West’s follow-up to his first opera, Nebuchadnezzar, which premiered at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last month.

Mary is reportedly “based on the biblical story of the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The Books of Matthew and Luke recount the story of Mary, who was divinely chosen by God to bring forth the Messiah,” according to a statement obtained by Rolling Stone. In a recent interview with Vogue, Ye said that the play was originally going to be called the Birth of Jesus, given that the opera is about the birth of Christ, but he changed it after he decided to imagine his re-telling from the perspective of Mary.

  • Tickets are on sale through the Lincoln Center’s website at $200 to $300 a pop.
