EGOT: Jennifer Hudson Wins Tony To Cement Her Award-Winning Status
Jennifer Hudson is officially an EGOT winner after winning big at the Tony Awards on Sunday (June 12). An EGOT is to be considered a grand slam in the entertainment industry, and signifies a recipient of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and Tony award winner.
As the youngest person to join the exclusive and illustrious group, Hudson received her Tony for Best Musicial as one of the producers of A Strange Loop, according to Variety.
Back in 2007, the 40-year-old won took home an Oscar, for her first major role in Dreamgirls. She also holds two Grammy awards, one for her 2009 self-titled album, which one Best R&B Album, and another as one of the principal Broadway cast members in The Color Purple in 2017, which won Best Musical Theatre Album.
In 2021, she scored a Daytime Emmy for the VR-animated short Baba Yaga, which she co-produced.
Hudson, is the 17th person to achieve EGOT status and the second Black woman to become an EGOT winner following Whoopi Goldberg.
John Legend is the only other Black entertainer to hold the EGOT title.
