Pop Smoke Pulls Off Rare Feat After Posthumous Album Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200 Chart

It’s a bittersweet celebration for fans of the late Brooklyn rapper.

The numbers are in for Billboard this week, and Pop Smoke nabbed the top spot with his debut album, Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon, which debuted at No. 1 atop of the Billboard 200 album chart.

  • The 19-track album sold  251,000 units during its first week. Billboard broke the numbers down, with the posthumous project racking up nearly 268 million streams and 59,000 in actual album sales.

The album was released a week ago on July 10 and marks the late rapper’s first project to ever go number one. It’s a bittersweet achievement for fans of the late Brooklyn rapper. The 20-year-old was tragically shot and killed in the early morning hours of Feb. 19 in what appeared to be a home invasion after a group of masked men invaded the residence and robbed him. Amid the album’s release, the Los Angeles Police Department revealed that five people have been arrested in connection to the shooting, three adults and two juveniles.

  • With this album, Pop joins Tupac, the Notorious B.I.G. and XXXtentacion as the fourth rapper to have an album top the charts posthumously, according to Billboard

  • Fans, close friends, family and his manager, Steven Victor, are doing what they can to keep Pop Smoke’s memory alive. Victor recently told Complex a documentary about the late rapper’s rise in the industry was in the works.

Pop Smoke's breakout moment came with the release of his single, "Welcome to the Party" in April 2019. He made his official introduction with his debut EP, Meet The Woo, last July. He dropped its following sequel,  Meet The Woo 2,  in February just two weeks prior to his death and debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart.
