Ms. Pat Says She Doesn’t Workshop Jokes With Her Family Before Performing Onstage

The comedian also tells BET.com how it ‘feels good’ to turn her pain into fortune.

Ms. Pat has been a stand-up comedian for years and now she’s enjoying all the fruits of her labor.

The comedienne recently dropped a comedy special with Netflix called Ya’ll Wanna Hear Something Crazy? as fans await for the second season of The Ms. Pat Show to drop on BET+.

Fans have always wondered if the comic shares her jokes ahead of time to her family members before walking on stage — and she quickly tells BET.com that’s a hard no.

“Usually I ask them to listen to me work this joke out about them and tell me what they think,” she explained. “I’m the mom — I’m not going to ask you can I do this joke, I’m grown. Usually, if I’m speaking about my kids, it’s because it happened and I take it to the stage. My kids are used to it by now. Sometimes, they help me punch it up.”

At the end of the special, the 49-year-old gave her audience advice to “turn their dark moments into laughter,” to which the actor is living proof of.

She tells BET.com it “feels good” to see where she is from where she started.

“When I was getting shot and going through all that mess, I didn’t understand why I was going through it,” she explained.

“I never thought in a million years that I would be making money and laughing at the things I went through in life. People would tell me the stories I would tell are really funny so I continued to tell stories as they came to me. The more I tell, the more people can relate to what I talk about.”
