For one South Carolina high school, Black History Month commenced with racist graffiti that had been scrawled on campus property, WCNC reports.
On Sunday, vandals reportedly spray painted the words "Happy N***** Month KKK" on a large rock that sits in front of South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.
“It was discovered yesterday morning, and since then, it’s been eradicated,” a school staffer told Raw Story on Monday. “People are still calling because it was posted. Whoever did it, took a picture.”
According to WCNC, a school custodian spotted the defaced rock early Sunday morning and quickly painted over it. On Monday afternoon, several art students repainted the rock with a colorful rainbow and the words "we are all [equal]."
"We have a diverse number of students that are predominately people of color, and I feel that everyone needs to be treated equally — especially in our school system. And with that appearing this weekend, I just really realized that we're not as equal as people say we are," student Madison Wightman told WCNC.
A statement released by the school confirmed that they do have outside camera surveillance, "but the police have not mentioned anything about their investigation."
"Rock Hill School District is one that celebrates diversity, and last week in our community, we celebrated a group called the Friendship 9, whose criminal records for trespassing in a local restaurant 54 years ago that was designated as for 'whites only' were vacated," read a statement from Rock Hill School. "While we are disappointed in the actions of one or a few, we are not discouraged as to the progress our community has made — and will make in the future — toward becoming a community for all."
