Tiffany Haddish Returns to ‘The Afterparty’ and Reveals Which Cast Member is Funnier Than Her

In an interview with BET, Haddish discusses the new season and what we can expect.

The mystery is finally over! The Afterparty, starring Tiffany Haddish, is back for another witty round of humor and mayhem in its whodunit anthology.

In season 2, Haddish will reprise her role as Detective Danner while Sam Richardson (Aniq) and Zoë Chao (Zoe) return. Added to the mix is a new crop of cast members, including Paul Waulter Hauser, Elizabeth Perkins, Jack Whitehall, Poppy Liu, Vivian Wu, Zach Woods, Anna Konkle, Ken Jeong, Ben Schwartz and John Cho. Haddish says each cast member “is in their bag” this season. “They're gonna hit you, they're gonna surprise you. They're gonna make you laugh. It's, inevitable.”

In the trailer, Detective Danner is on a mission to solve a murder at a wedding where the groom dies. Like season 1, wedding guests will recount the shenanigans as Detective Danner tries to solve the case.

Lizzo and Tiffany Haddish Unite on Stage for an Ultimate Twerk Off

After a highly acclaimed debut season, Haddish says this time will be “hilarious” with “a lot of funny stuff” as the cast leaned into their improv chops. “The directors would come in, and they would just let us go. Sometimes it went too far. And sometimes far enough. We were always laughing and having fun.”

While in production, Haddish –who admits she cried on set due to intense laughter–  recounts one of those moments when the cast pushed the limits during a scene with Richardson and Hauser, whose skills Haddish remarks as “off the chain”. In the scene, Haddish says Hauser, known to “go all the way left sometimes,” jumps over couches, then suddenly lands on his feet. “It got so crazy. We were laughing so hard.”

Known always to bring the heat on the stage and the screen, Haddish reveals that the reassurance from the cast encouraged her to level up this season. “Sam is like my brother and we complement each other. We’re always pushing each other. It's always support there. She adds, “But John is so intense. His intensity can be full-blown hilarity.” which is an attribute she wanted to mirror.

Although Haddish’s thrill for this season stems from her opportunity to “flex” her prowess with “people that are really talented and super strong,” she notes a particular actor who she believes would blow her out of the water. She says, “Paul is definitely funnier than me. Hands down funnier. If we had to do stand up, like head-to-head, Paul would probably destroy me.” She also says he made her break character. “His comedy is so physical. He always brings some different every single take. That man is just hilarious.”

This season is a reunion, as Haddish has previously worked with much of the cast. Back in the day, she and Whitehall performed at comedy clubs together. Of working with him on this series, she says, “It was super fun to see him in a whole new environment”. But one reunion that has been the most valuable to her physical health is that of Jeong. Like Whitehall, they met in the early days of her career while making rounds at The Laugh Factory. In between comedy, Jeong doubled as a licensed physician, whose medical expertise came in hand while on set.

Haddish recalls that he came to her aid after she tore both meniscus while on set. She says, “I was having a lot of pain. He gave me some of the best advice, and sent me to the right place.” Now she says, “I can run and wear high heels again.”

Season 2 of The Afterparty premieres on Apple TV+ on July 12.
