Donald Glover Gets Candid On ‘Atlanta’ Comparisons to ‘Dave’

“I just don’t think they have a lot in common,” said the TV star.

Donald Glover is still not feeling the parallels people continue to make between "Atlanta" and "Dave."

While both FXX dramas reached success on the network by highlighting the journey of two rappers' journey to mainstream airplay, both shows are distinctly different, and Glover wants people to recognize that. During a sitdown with Vanity Fair's lie detector series, Glover kept it real when put to the test.

Glover was asked by his "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" costar Maya Erskinem, if he's "more talented than this person." Then he was shown a photo of Dave Burd, a.k.a Lil Dicky.

After responding, "Yeah," Glover elaborated further.

“This is gonna start beef, but I actually like him,” he said. “I think he’s a really nice guy, but I’m just conceited.”

Then Glover was pressed if he gets "insulted" when "critics compared" "Atlanta" that he created with "Dave" that was co-created by Burd.

“I don’t remember any, like, critics,” Glover explained. “I think it was just people. But I definitely was insulted, not because I think that Dave is bad. Because I actually really think Dave is a good show. I just don’t think they have a lot in common.”

This is not the first time Glover has spoken out about the show's comparisons. In 2021, he took to X (formally known as Twitter).

"and just for the record, im watching yall sayin 'dave' is on par. like yall forgot what we did. no disrespect," he tweeted.

"we got black people on here debating which is better, and IM the sellout?" he continued.

After four seasons, "Atlanta" wrapped in November 2022 with seven Emmys under its belt. Season three of "Dave" ended in May 2023.

According to TV Line, a fourth season is not in the works “as Dave Burd has decided to take an extended break to focus on music and other ventures.” The statement continued, "that does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the future,” as Burd will develop “future projects for us through his overall production deal with FXP.”
