EXCLUSIVE Rebecca Crews Q&A: Part II
We couldn’t interview Rebecca Crews without getting an update on her children—Naomi, Azriel, Tera, Wynfrey, and Isaiah. With summer right around the corner, Rebecca has plans lined up already to keep the little ones occupied.
Also, Rebecca shares a piece of exciting news about her oldest daughter that The Family Crews fans have been dying to know.
What are your children’s plans for the summer?
Shooting The Family Crews Season 3, of course! Doing some summer camps, lots of swimming. My kids swim like crazy. They are always tearing up their hairdos with the swimming. I always get these flattering comments about their hair being messy. My kids swim, get over it. They’re like little fish that stay in the water. There’s a beach here that I’m sure we will be going to every other day. Music lessons, horse back riding … there’s a horseback camp that my kids have expressed interest in. We are just finding our way. Really hoping to be shooting the show [this] summer. We haven’t heard yet, so we’re waiting to hear on that. That’s what we were planning on doing with our summer.
How have the kids handled their lives being documented for the world to see?
I have one kid now telling me that he doesn’t want to be on The Family Crews anymore. Bless his heart but he’s jealous of his television counterpart because you know my husband has another family on TV. So he watches his TV counterpart and he says, “I want to be with dad.” So he gets a little upset because he wants to show off on his own and do his own thing. I tell him if he quits The Family Crews then he can’t do it. He says, “Well I want my own family,” or “I want to be on my own.” But I told him he would make mommy cry and he says, “OK, I’ll stay.” Then he’s all happy again and he asks, “When are we shooting the show?”
My kids overall have not expressed any great distrust for people or severe reactions to fame. We are right now in a very culturally non-black area, so we’re not as recognized as we are if we go into New York City. They’re not getting as much as they did when they lived in California because we lived in a multicultural area of Altadena, so they had a lot of fame issues when they lived in a community that was full of our fans. We would go the playground and they would surround us and chat with us. Nine times out of 10, they were really sweet. You understand how that can be. Occasionally you got people that don’t know what to say and they say something not so nice. But overall, my kids have been wonderfully treated by their fans and by people that [are] observant that we are a famous family. They are very nonchalant about it because they have been in showbiz vicariously through their dad and I. They have always come with us to things. They’ve been to Hollywood premieres since they were little children. They’ve had famous people in their home. So they got this otherworldly thing about it like, “Aren’t we supposed to be famous too?” When do we get to go into the limo? I always tell them, “One day.” My actress daughter Azriel wants to be in the business and she loves it. Tera Bear, who loves her daddy, is so enamored with this lifestyle. She’s always asking me why she can’t go to things. She’s looking for her own opportunity and she’s like, “I want to be on Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel.” She wants to be that kid star, so we are trying to make that happen. I’m a little conflicted. Does "momager" fit me? I’m not sure I want to be cast in that role where I’m running her off to everything so she can be a star. I don’t know if she’s able to handle that just yet.
I read that your oldest daughter, Naomi, is now married?
Yes, she did get married. It was just a civil ceremony. They are in a beautiful new place and they’re doing well. Naomi has still not passed her cosmetology license. She didn’t do well on her second test so she wants to wait and go back. She’s really enjoying being a mom and she’s loving her baby. We get pictures every other day of Miley walking and sitting on the potty, pulling down clothes from a hanger and all those cute things little babies do. She’s really enjoying her motherhood and I always knew that about Naomi. She’s a mother from her soul and her heart. She’s been that girl since she was a little girl. She was my child that was always caretaking other kids, so we always thought she would be a teacher or a social worker or something along those lines. I’m not surprised she’s very involved with her motherhood and doesn’t really want to work right now. I give her that option and I respect that tremendously.
Tune in Sunday May 15 at 8P/7C for the season finale of The Family Crews.
