Nas Announces Time Is Illmatic Tour

Esco takes his documentary on the road, continues to perform classic debut in its entirety in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

Twenty years in the game and we can have a movie night.

NasIllmatic-inspired documentary, Time Is Illmatic now has a theatrical release. In October, the Queens-bred MC will set out on a tour to deliver it in-person to viewing audiences, along with performances of his culture-shifting debut.

The jaunt kicks off Oct. 2, in Rochester, N.Y., at the Main Street Armory and will wrap across country in Oakland on Oct. 19. He'll be perfoming the album in its entirety, and on select dates he'll screen the movie.

The flick's release is part of an ongoing celebration of the 20th anniversary of his first LP. Nas also dropped the album Illmatic XX this year.

Tribeca film announced in May that it acquired North American distribution rights to the documentary.

"When we started this project, [writer/producer] Erik Parker and I couldn't imagine that audiences would one day be able to experience the film with a live performance of Illmatic, the album that started it all," director One9 said in a statement.

The movie features an interview with Nas' father and sometimes collaborator, Olu Dara; and one with Nas' brother, Jabari "Jungle" Jones, who opened up about the death of Willy "Ill Will" Graham, a significant tragedy in the making of Nas' early music.

"I want to thank the Tribeca Film Festival for supporting the film with the incredible platform they've built over the years," Nas said. "... I also want to thank One9 and Erik Parker for their persistence and hard wok. Those guys and I come from the same place and era, which gives the doc an authenticity that is important to me."

Time Is Illmatic will also be available via iTunes on October 3.
